Jen Graves Talks Land Art

The Stranger's visual art editor Jen Graves got a grant from the Warhol Foundation and Creative Capital to travel the country looking at the great works of land art. She writes a compelling article about her thoughts on contemporary land art and the place of city scapes in its history.

Street Portraits

There is something really great about this photo blog: Downtown from Behind. The quality of light, the depth of field, the movement forward all take me on an easy ride down a favorite street. Following a friend perhaps...heading home...

Re-am-use-ment

This park in Lima reminds me of the visions in my head for leftover spaces in New Orleans...super colorful and fun use of neglected infrastructure!

Mapping/Graphics Inspiration

Another referral from Landscape+Urbanism is Urban Cartography. A site that Jason King describes "The posts simply show collected imagery of a variety of informatics and other interesting mashups of data from around the globe. Not mapping in the traditional sense, these densely woven graphics provide some great inspiration for representation in ways that would make Edward Tufte proud (or sometimes cringe)."

I like Mega Shark, because although the content is nonsense, complex information (movement, time, spatial relationships) is presented beautifully.

Playable 2010

Playground design competition due October 2010. Right now they are in the first phase, which is accepting preliminary entries from children. Adult entrants need to create designs that are responsive to the children's preliminary entries. "Playable 2010 invites designers of all types from around the world to design playground equipment and spaces that will give a sense of place, wonder and fun so strong that they will entice children outdoors to play."
Categories include:

Playable D-I-Y Spaces
Playable Kids
Looks like it could be an interesting and fun challenge.

I'm testing creating a link using a post Gia emailed around. Could be a good read, perhaps excerpts. I think we should do a walk as an activity like Claire and Danielle's first year transect. Landscape+Urbanism: City Limits: Where I Walked...
